Daily Prompt: Brainwave
What’s the best idea you’ve ever had? Regale us with every detail of the idea — the idea itself, where it came to you, and the problem it solved.
After my husband’s death, my son wanted me to move to US and live with him. It took me eight months to move. There was the question what to do with my home. First option was to let it as it was. Continue keeping my servant, paying him his pay plus additional money for food. The second option was to empty the house and let it go on rent.
The second option was definitely a better option, because I was earning money from it instead of spending. The only question was where was I going to stay when coming back for visits? I didn’t feel like staying in with relatives or in hotels.
Then I had a brainwave. I divided the house into two portions — upper and lower. The stairs which went to the upper floor opened into the lounge area had sliding doors. I had locks installed on both sides of the door. A divider was made along the side of the stairs to the ceiling above.
Now I had to face the question of electricity and gas. I had an additional meter installed upstairs for my electricity charges. When I am there I will pay half the gas charges as I couldn’t get another gas meter in the same house.
During all this turmoil in my life, I had to sell off my downstairs custom built furniture including my king sized bed at throwaway prices. It was heart wrenching to say the least. The rooms upstairs had their own sets of furniture. I had to give away my beautiful crockery accumulated through the years gone by.
I gave up the lower portion on rent. My tenants are a young couple with two kids. My car stays in the garage, jacked up. There is an outside stairway beside the garage for going up. My upstairs portion remains locked while I live here.
