Wall Hangings

Wall to Wall
by Michelle W.
What do you display on the walls of your home — photos, posters, artwork, nothing? How do you choose what to display? What mood are you trying to create?

The three chapters from the Quran in the wall hanging. They are Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas.

I used to display photographs, oil paintings, and tapestries on the walls in my home. Once I realized that it went against my religious injunctions, I removed them; except for a photograph of my husband in the hallway, and another one on one wall of the kitchen.

I feel bad about still displaying photos, but I can’t help it. I am keeping them to give me an illusion of him still being there.

I have removed photographs from my bedroom. That’s the place where most of the time, I say my prayers. I have packed the photographs, and put them in the attic. Now it has one wall hanging like the one above in the photograph. Another one is Calligraphy done in stone work.

I did waste time, effort, and money on objects, and displays on walls which I shouldn’t have done. My excuse is that I grew up mentally with time. A Persian saying is, “Der ayad durust ayad”. It means, “you got it late but right”, or “better late than never”, applies to me.
