Is it pessimistic to have no expectation from people? Should we expect the best from others until they prove otherwise?

I don’t think it is pessimistic to have no expectations from people. I am trying to be realistic. When you come across really nice people you are pleasantly surprised, and grateful at the same time. My attitude is to keep myself from hurt feelings. There has been too many such instances in my life.
