Masks Off
by Ben Huberman
We’re less than a week away from Halloween! If you had to design a costume that channeled your true, innermost self, what would that costume look like? Would you dare to wear it?
If I had to wear a costume for Halloween, I would go dressed as a witch. It’s easy to have — a black cloak, a hat, and a broom.
The only difference would be attaching a small machine to the broom, so that I could go up in the air, at the start of a button.
I can imagine ringing my neighbor’s house. They would be expecting children for trick, or treat, certainly not a grown up, make believe witch. When they would open the door, I would shoot up. Another ring, and then another. They would be spooked, and give up opening their door on that night to anyone else.
This is all fantasy. I know I will never do something like that, even for fun’s sake.
I had an actual witch for a grandma. No wait, that is not correct —- she was my grandmother’s sister.
How she knew magic? I wish I had known I would be writing someday, and had thought of asking her when she was alive. She died decades ago, so that’s not possible.
