As long as one doesn’t take it really to be true, one can hear it in one ear, and let it go through the other. It does feel nice to hear from someone extolling you to no end, but in the end it’s deceiving your own self. A time comes when you start believing what the flatterer tells you, and you began having a false image of yourself.
It’s better to have an enemy, where you know where you stand, than having a friend who lets you believe you are too wonderful for words, and the reality is otherwise.
