Think Global, Act Local

Think Global, Act Local
by Michelle W.
“Think global, act local.” Write a post connecting a global issue to a personal one.

I do my minuscule worth of efforts locally towards global issues of earth warming, conserving the energies we have like gas, petrol, and electricity. I turn off un-necessary lights. During daytime I pull curtains aside to let sunlight in, and don’t switch on lights.

I buy things like eggs, meat, milk, bread, vegetables for a whole week to avoid using gas more often. I buy dry rations of food for a whole month.
When I used to have a vegetable garden, I gave over my surplus vegetables to near neighbors, and to the helps in my home.

I don’t waste food. I put that much on my plate, which I can eat. I don’t like it when I see other people piling their plates, and then not finishing it, and throwing it in the trash bin.

Back home I delayed switching on air conditioners till it became unbearable. Similarly I would turn down the thermostat on water heater when hot water was not needed. I would completely switch off the water heater when I wasn’t home for a day, or two. (You can’t do this in cold climate, otherwise the pipes will freeze over).

I use re- usable containers for food in freezer avoiding the use of polythene bags. For parties, and guests I don’t use throw away plates, and plastic cutlery. That makes more work for me, but it’s less junk.
