A Bad Day

Since the time I was back, we were low on supplies, and needed everything under the sun. Twice during the day God saved me from accidents. I used to think driving was safer here, but it’s not. There are people on the road who disregard their own safety, and have total disregard for the safety of others. They drive as if they own the roads, and the lesser mortals (in their eyes) have no claim. Honking is so rude, and they indulge in it whenever they feel like doing it.

I don’t know why Son chose the cart we use to bring our groceries inside? Usually Son helps in bringing in our purchases. That day he was in a hurry to get to the mosque for the evening prayer, leaving me to do the needful. Every step of the way things were falling, and I was picking them up. I wonder how does he manages when he brings the things in?

My bad day wasn’t over. I was feeling sleepy, and didn’t feel like going for a walk. I was thinking of Son that if I didn’t go out with him, he will slump before his laptop instead. I walked sleepily after him, and that was when I hit the road flat in the face. My knees, nose, and the right side of the face took the burnt. The pain was exacerbated. Son helped me to our home. Blood was dripping nonstop from my nose. Son was aghast at what had happened to me. He conferred with Nola, as she took a look at me through FaceTime. Seeing that I hadn’t broken any bones (thank God), Son cleaned my injuries with alcohol, and bandaged me, giving me painkillers to dull the pain.

The next day I went to see my primary care physician. He took a look at my injuries. My face is healing, but my knees are in bad shape, and they will take a while to get healed. A lesson to me is not to go on a walk when I’m in dire need of sleep 💤.

I search for my insurance cards. They were in my green bag, and I’ve to transfer them to the black one I’m carrying. I can’t find them, and I feel frantic that I’ll miss my appointment with the doctor. I turn the bag upside down, and now my bed is strewn with things. Where could they disappear?

Both my feet have ballooned into something I don’t recognize as my own two feet. Are they really mine, or they belong to an alien?

My Sciatica have come back in full swing. The left leg throbs with pain, and walking has become difficult. For the last two days I take Advil to numb the pain. The self medication leaves my mouth dry, and I feel like napping all the time. I have to walk to the doctor’s office, as there is no car parking.

I can’t even say my prayers. In the midst of a prayer I’m asleep, wake up with a jolt, probably my guarding angels trying to tell me that I’m in the presence of God, “Hey! Wake up—you haven’t completed”. I try to shrug off the sleep, but unable to do so–and go back to sleep. 😴

The person I wonder at is mostly myself

Need sleep to function everyday

The cranky me gets deprived as time slips away

Each day is the same

My nap time sneaks away

Chiefly my own fault, should block everything beforehand

Not to answer the myriad calls coming

Should be able to ignore, and let sleep carry me away

My plea: don’t ring me at noon time

So I can have a shut eye midday

After journeying back to Houston, the days before, and after were tiring. Mentally, and physically I was exhausted. I was trying to catch up on sleep. A few days back, feeling very tired and sleepy, eschewing evening meals, I asked him not to disturb me when he came back from his evening prayers in the mosque. I told him clearly if the light was off, it meant I was asleep, he should heat his meal himself, and no sounds please!

Enter son, and the first thing he bellowed, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” Getting no answer from me, he opened my bedroom’s door, turned on the light and asked, “Why are you sleeping at this time?”

Tell me what should I have said?

Feeling peevish, I got up from bed groggily. I curtailed my annoyance at his waking me. I put the supper on the table, and called him. I asked him, “Did you listen to what I had told you– not to wake me?”

“Sorry, I didn’t hear it. You can go to sleep now”.

I could only grind my teeth in exasperation.

Who can cheat death when it comes along

None I can say

With its deathly silence it holds you in its grip

Taking out your soul

While you close your eyes and sleep

Till eternity

I looked past your cheating

I wanted you happy

Did it matter

I wasn’t happy at all

So I turned the other way and left

Trying to forge a new life

Working past the pain

Now the time has long gone

For you to think of us together again

Once trust is broken

It can never be whole again

Usually my evenings are spent watching those shows which I like. I am in luck when there is no load shedding of electricity which is a common occurrence here.
I do my cooking at this time. Cooking bores me now and it’s repetitive, so while I do my cooking I watch my favorite TV shows if they are on. My pet dislikes are ads. I know they are a necessity. If there weren’t any ads the shows won’t run. I have noticed whenever a show is popular more ads are there.
I wish the ad people would come out with more interesting ads so that we don’t get bored with them. I think they should change them frequently too, like the coke ads. Some are so bad you dread watching them. I wish they come out with more innovative ideas so that (unfortunately) when I have to watch them I won’t take out huge chunks of hair from my already thinning patch in despair.
There is the milk ad. You are told if you add it to your tea it will be marvelous. You are bound to say, “What is wrong with that?” The thing which jars me is their prancing about. If they had done it imaginatively it wouldn’t look so cheap. Then there is the cream ad. A lovely lady with a smile tells you to use it. Somehow I doubt that lady using it on her arms and legs. If we did I am sure most of us will start resembling gorillas, because the non-existing hair will also come out for a breath.
Now the meat cubes ad! This one tells you to add it to your veggies. The cubes will make you feel you are having meat. What a choice! While the cost of meat is spiraling up and the currency is going down (thanks to our govt.) the cubes will do the trick and that at a steep price too.
Next in line is the cellular ad. You are told to spend a lot of bucks every day to get a shiny new car. It is your money which is being spent, not theirs. If they had such big hearts they would have given you a lower price of their phone package instead of minting you for money. They lure you with the tune that the more you spend; you will have a better chance of winning.
The one I like is where the sale person has a drink and he dances to get the escalator moving. To come back to my original bone of contention, I hate it when I am bored to death and would like to see a movie, there are so many ads linked to it I end up not seeing it. They waste your time. You start feeling sleepy and to keep awake you start munching this and that. Normally I give up and go to sleep.
Being starved for entertainment we are forced to watch such ads. My escape route is either to switch off or surf while the program takes a break.
